Chapter 13 For The First And Last Time
I couldn’t go back in to the house, I had to get away from the smell. I tried for the first time on my own flying but with no one to hold my hand – I didn’t know how to. I took to the water instead. As I went under the surface I only looked straight ahead nowhere else until I saw the land. I was at his house when I walked onto the beach. I stood for a moment and just stared at it. I was not sure if I should go in or not, then I remembered the birds that made him happy. They needed to be fed.
I was still numb walking up the stairs and the tears just kept falling. I went up to the garden and lit the lamps again. I felt again the urge to throw up but I sat down to settle down. I heard the hoo hoo of the Great Horned Owl, he said I would hear it and fall in love with it. I went down the steps again and opened the door and looked around, it was even more beautiful than I had remembered. I needed to change I could not walk around in these wet clothes, I went down to the closet.
It was enormous inside just as I had thought, I could smell him everywhere. I saw a white shirt on a chair, I picked it up and put it on, it was still part of him. I looked around for some pants. I took them with me, I went back past the bed without looking at it and up the stairs to find something for the birds.
As I walked around the house I began to know him better. There were books and current newspapers from all over the world piled up by country. There were paintings on glass sheets, why didn’t he paint his own family? I went back down to that room, he did look so much like his father. I couldn’t stay in there long. I wandered through other rooms and found several very large landscape paintings on glass, he must have done these. The tears kept falling. In another room I found piles of handwritten stories, he must have written them, but he wasn’t here to ask anymore.
I went back to try to find something for the birds. Then I noticed a wonderful smell of fruit, I followed it and found the kitchen. There were piles of fresh fruit everywhere, why did he have them here, he told me he couldn’t eat anymore. Maybe just for the smell? I saw a large glass by the sink. I fumbled around with it till the water came out like in the bath, the glass filled quickly. I turned and saw a large container with bird seed. I took all of this and went and filled the bowls in the garden. I heard the hoo hoo again and his voice in my head say again “You will hear the Great Horned Owl soaring through the night sky” I fell to my knees and fell over and cried out loud.
Once the tears again subsided a bit, I had things to do. She had made it too easy for me. She told me she would come back. Why had she hated him so much, he was innocent. If she could kill him, I could kill her. Why had she come back at all what was she planning on doing? It felt strange to be wearing his clothes that still smelled like him.
I walked back down the stairs to the beach and looked out across the Ocean ” Shaun”. I walked along until I got to the end of the Wharf where the Witch lived. I knocked on the only door around and a beautiful young woman opened it. ” Did you know Shaun Thompson?” I asked her, I heard a voice come from inside ” Come in”. The young woman moved so I could come in. A much older woman sitting in a chair said “My Grandmother knew him” The young woman sat down to study me. ”He made you didn’t he?” the older woman asked, I nodded my head yes.
“He is dead?” the young woman asked. The tears started to fall again. ”How do I die?” I asked aloud to either of them. ”Can you tell us what happened?” the older one asked. I told them everything, every feeling, every detail of what happened since we fed last. The older one spoke ” You were both poisoned. I had heard of it but did not think it would work. Someone gave it to your victims before you fed on them. It was all set up” The young woman gave me a handkerchief keeping careful not to touch me.
“Candella is what it’s called, it can’t kill you only weaken you. You can be made weak enough to die in another way. Another effect from it is the fruitless desire you both felt” “Can you make some for me? They looked at each other. ”You can have his house and mine for your trouble” The older one got up and went to a bookshelf and got a book and handed it to the younger one and shook her head yes. ”You’ll want a lot?” “Enough for two people” I said. She left with the book. The older one sat down again. ”Can you tell me more?” I told her everything from the first time I saw him in his spot till now, including my plan to kill Lynn.
The younger one returned with a large metal container and handed it to me still careful not to touch me. I took it and walked over to the door. ”Please promise me to feed the birds, the handle in the sink turn it to the right and water will come” I turned back and looked at them, the older one nodded and I saw the glisten of tears in her eyes. ”It made him happy” I closed the door behind me. I had to go past the spot where we fed last night and I thought of the Eagles, ‘Why did she have to kill them too?’
I just stared at the ground and walked to Collette’s house, I knew people were staring at me but I just walked past them while the tears fell silently. When I got to Collette’s house and knocked on the door, her man answered. I stepped in and told him ” Collette has been murdered, she was at my house. Her body has been taken care of” He just stared at me, “Thank you for having been kind to me all these years” and I hugged him. He pulled away as I expected. ”Goodbye” then I turned and went into the darkness. ”Goodbye Miss Christine” I heard him whisper.
I walked again back to his house, the sun was coming and I needed to still write out the two I had spoken with would get the house and the Castle. In his desk I found a marriage certificate with his name on it filled already “How did he get this?” I found 2 gold wedding bands next to it. One was too big so I would need to hold it on with my other fingers but the other fit fine. I put them both on. He was no longer here to ask how he got the certificate. I filled in my name and made myself his wife. I then wrote out my will leaving everything to them. Signing it for the first and last time Mrs. Christine Thompson. I did and was going to do everything he wanted.
I leaned back in the chair and the light was coming and I saw in the corner a cello, he must have played it. Did I know him at all? What would it have been like to live a life with him? I will never know. I got up and walked across the room. I could feel the heat of the day starting and I heard the birds up in the garden. I went down stairs to the bed chamber. I laid on the bed “Shaun” I could still smell him everywhere, the tears were still running down my face into my hair. The day passed with no thought. At dusk I heard him say in my head “Soon Christine” I shot up and looked around but he wasn’t there. ”Soon Shaun”.
I went to the kitchen and again performed the same ritual with the water and the bird seed that he must have countless times. I took off the counter the container they had given me and took it up to the garden. I poured some in a glass and smelled it – it was animal blood. I drank some, it was horrible. Not the sweet cool taste of his blood nor the salty taste of fresh blood from others. Bland with the taste of herbs I did not recognize. I looked around his beautiful garden one last time while I started feeling sick. I went down to the beach and swam to my Castle.
I did not think she would be there when I came out of the water, but she was. ”You’ve kept me waiting beautiful” She said as she walked up to me. I also noticed a young man on his knees. "Who is he?" "A peace offering, a replacement, something to make your if you want." I walked over to him, he was terrified and tried to crawl away but his hands were tied. I saw the bruises and the swelling on his face I could also smell his blood.
"He is another pretty isn't he?" She said as she came behind him and put him back on his knees, I saw again the terror on his face. When I looked into his eyes I had a flash of a house full of dead people that nearly knocked me over, he looked away from me and she hit him. I had another flash of her doing that to a young woman. I heard him start to cry. "Do all you men things all whimper like puppies?" She yelled at him.
"Leave him alone" I said to her. "I will have him" She smiled at me. "I thought you might like him" She cam up to me and pulled the wet hair from my face and kissed my cheek, she walk around me and I noticed the blade he had given me was still here, she must have been too busy with him to have noticed it. She reached around and put her hands on my breasts " Pleasure undreamed is your tonight" I almost threw up with her words I hoped I could hold on long enough.
I pulled away from her and walked over to him, the blade was close to him - he hadn't seen it either, I kneeled down next to him and say how badly she had hurt him. I could smell his blood all over him, he never looked at me. "He is pretty too isn't he, take him - I want to watch." I crawled over closer to him, I knew he was near death, I pulled his shirt off and threw it on top of the blade, I could smell his fear. I pulled him close to me and put my lips on his neck. " He likes it" I heard her say. I didn't drink, I didn't pierce his skin, I didn't hurt him.
He was puzzled and still tried to pull away but I wouldn't let him go. I leaned him back far enough so he would fall back, I heard his shoulder pop, I picked up the blade as I got up and faced her. I walked up to her and she took my hand. " MMMMM you’re wearing his clothes, I like that, they look better on you – your prettier than he was”. She put my face in her hands and leaned to kiss me. I rolled my head back and she bit into my throat very hard. It hurt but I never made a sound. My eyes found the Moon and I just gazed upon it until she stopped and pushed me away. She stumbled. “What have you done?” I slapped her across the face as hard as I could and she fell to her knees, I went up behind her and slit her throat so deep her head fell from her shoulders.
I turned and looked at him, he had managed to get up, he had been watching it all. I could feel the sickness. I knew his thought 'If she can kill her, she can kill me' I walked over to him and looked at him, he looked so much like Shaun. "Will you please kill me as well?" he asked with tears in his voice. "You can have a life" He shook his head no. "Think about it for a bit first. What is your name?" "Darian" Thompson flashed through my mind and hit me in the chest.
"Your last name?" I asked him "Thompson" he said. My tears started falling again, he looked at me with Shaun's same green eyes. Badly bruised but the same beautiful eyes. "You were born in this country?" He shook his head yes. "My grandparents came here, there was a family here before a few generations, but the family rumor is that the youngest son killed them all over a woman and set the houses on fire to cover it up. "Shaun didn't kill them" I said. "How did you know his name?" he said, his nose was stuffing up and blood had started coming out.
The tears were chocking in my throat. "He loved his family and I love him, she did to him what she did to you" I let my eyes wander up to the moon. "Shaun" I whispered. "He was my maker, he became my everything, this all happened because I dared to love him. I could hear the blood clotting in his lungs. I looked back down to him and he was staring out to the Ocean. "You look like him that is why she chose you" He looked up at me.
The thought 'I can't live without her' The blade was in my hand still. "I have never killed anyone coldly" I said to him. "Please do it" he said. I went around behind him with the blade in my hand and kneeled down behind him and asked him one last time. "You can have a life, are you sure you want to die?" He shook his head yes. "I can make you immortal" "I don't want to live forever without her" I put the blade to his throat. "Shaun lived so can you" "He is a stronger man than me, please make it stop hurting, I wish she had killed me sooner" He was openly crying now. "I'm sorry Darian" I slipped the blade across his throat. I heard one last weak choking sound and he went limp against me. I untied his hands and gently laid him down, he looked at peace.
I turned and faced the Ocean, I had never felt so sick and so alone in my life. I listened to the sound of the Ocean and the crickets. I thought of Collette, I looked up at where the Eagles nest was. I walked out to his spot barely able to stand in the waves. ”Shaun” I slit my wrists and turned the blade to my throat and rammed it through with all the strength I had left and pulled it across until there was nothing anymore.
I was still numb walking up the stairs and the tears just kept falling. I went up to the garden and lit the lamps again. I felt again the urge to throw up but I sat down to settle down. I realize there is a glaring out of time error here. I wrote some of this much later than the rest. I will be filling in the gap in time some day.
