Chapter 5
I laid my head back down and relaxed a bit. 'Perfectly every time", how many times had he done this I wondered. They are just junk, how can they be worth anything - just goes to show me what I know. I wasn't sure if I believed him or not. I believed Emily knew nothing about it. How did he or they even know about them?. There were just stone. Where had Chad gotten them from anyway, if he stole them, then from whom? I closed my eyes and the next thing I knew I felt his fingers running across my shoulder.
He grabbed a hold of my arm as I jumped so I wouldn't go under, I looked around and it was dark - near pitch. He still had my arm. "I'm going to let you go and go over to the stairs, just head to the light, I will be at the top." I did what he said and crawled up the stairs to the candle, I couldn't see him at all. I got to what I thought was the top and reached out and found his hands, he pulled me forward but there was still one more and I stumbled but he didn't let me fall.
He let me go and then I felt a large towed wrap around me. "Dinner is ready, I guess you want to go change?" , I was embarrassed and said nothing. He shoved a flashlight in my hand, "Can you make it up there and back OK?" " I think so" "I will be at the bottom of the steps for you in about fifteen minutes, I have candles in your room lit for you" Now I was just feeling stupid.
I wrapped the towel around myself tighter, I had quite a chill even though it was still very warm, I followed the candles all the way to the stairs and up, I could feel he was still watching me as I got to the stairs and went up. He thinks of everything doesn't he I thought. As he said the candles were all it in my room all the way into the bathroom. I just brushed out my hair and put a tee shirt and jeans on, I went back into the hall and he was standing there already smiling in the candle light at me. I wish he would stop doing stuff like this. He started walking down the steps and across the lobby and I followed. "There will be knives for you on the table - if you want" He said without turning around.
I nearly back slapped him in the back of his head. He turned the corner inside what looked to be a greenhouse but it wasn't - there were sliding doors to another balcony. It was a glass room. I could see some of the power had come back on in the basin below and I could also still see the fire's burning. "I'm sorry" he said and I jumped and turned and glared at him. " This is the last of the good food, all the rest has gone bad I'm afraid" he said and pointed to the table. Just as with the tray - it was beautiful. I just nodded to him.
He sat at one end and I sat the opposite. Between us us we ate it all which translated into possible a four course meal. When we finished, "Do you want to go back to your room, or would you like to stay here and maybe talk a little more?" "I will stay here" he gave me that smile of his again. He collected everything but left one knife on the table. He was back rather quickly, he couldn't have washed anything. He opened the sliding doors and went out and stood, he looked over his shoulder at me.
I got up and went out and stood next to him, there was a wonderful cool wind, not as strong as it had been though. "I think the wind event is most likely over, but those fires will still be going for some time" he said. I didn't know what to say back to him. He turned and looked at me again. I went to sit on one the the chaise in the corner and I heard him follow behind me. He sat on the one next to me. "If it's the stones being stolen that is bothering you, I can get you something nicer - with a few less bad memories"
I just stared at him in the darkness, I hadn't really thought about that. They were not that important to me, just pretty to look at nothing more. "What are you going to do if he wants them back from you?" "The longer it takes you to say anything to the police about them the less sooner he is to find out about them being gone." He said" "No, I am not angry about the stones" he cut me off "I'm glad, I though they were more important to you than we thought" I didn't say anything. I was beginning to feel very tired.
"Would you like some Wine?" he asked me, he must have seen me yawn. "Sure" "I will be back in a minute" He vanished like a shadow in the dark. I laid my head back and took a deep breath, I could just barely smell the smoke. He was back with the Wine, two glasses and a candle that he put on the table between us and lit. I was going to pour the Wine for myself but he snatched the bottle and a glass very quickly before I could and poured it out and handed it back to me. I put it down and let him pour another "Salute". I allowed our glasses to kiss. For almost warm it was nice and did nothing but what I expected - put me to sleep. He fell asleep before I did though.
He trusted me enough to sleep next to me, I kept thinking as I closed my eyes and let myself drift off. I couldn't quite completely let go. My anger with him had briefly subsided, my fear was also subsided, but that was taking longer. At some point I fell completely asleep and it was morning. I stirred a bit and noticed there was a blanket on me. He was up and standing at the railing with a cup of coffee.
"I would have thought the smell of the coffee would have woken you up sooner." He said and I looked at the table and the Wine and candle had been replaced with a coffee pot and an empty cup and everything one would need for a cup. I was starting to think he really had been raised the in the hospitality field. He poured me a cup and gave it to me. I gulped it down in one take. "Why don't you go and take a shower in my room, the water works in there. " Thank you" I said and briskly got up and walked away. I could feel that I hurt his feelings when I left .
I went to my room first and got everything I needed, went to his room and locked the door, like he wouldn't have a key, it occurred to me, so I locked the bathroom door as well. At least I would hear him come in. The bathroom was not quite as opulent as mine but close enough. It was wonderful to be in a real shower again the water running through my hair like rain. When I got out and toweled off and was indulging in the Rose scented lotion that had been in my room, I realized today was Thursday and I had no idea what time it was.
I hurried back to my room and saw it was only nine, I still had all day with him. He said I would be leaving tomorrow, but how I thought - the car was still smashed in from the tree. That must mean someone else was going to come here. Who though? I went through my stuff and decided to take a chance on a dress. I suppose I trusted him enough by now at least to do this. My anger rose again a little in me, still how dare he do all and any of this. I had left my door open again and I heard him say "What a pretty dress"
I turned sharply around and stared at him, I think again I scared him, how can he be afraid of me? I hadn't even heard him come up. "There isn't much left edible except bread to eat today" I was going to say something about tomorrow but decided not to just yet maybe tonight. I just shrugged my shoulders to him. I wasn't that hungry anyway. "Do you want to spend the day with me or would you rather stay in here? I'm pretty good at massages and after all this is suppose to be a vacation for you" He has nerve I will give him credit for that. "Are you certified?" I asked "For a massage?" " Yes" "No but no one has ever complained."
I walked right up to him quickly and he moved so I could pass him. I marched down the steps and into the lobby, I was going to have to work up my own nerve to let him massage me, my own self control was wearing thin and I didn't want to stay mad at him, my head was starting to hurt from it. "Cards" I said to him "And dice". I nodded my head yes. We spent the better part of the day playing for the last loaf of French Bread. I really wished I hadn't enjoyed my time with him so much.
By late afternoon it had gotten pretty hot and stuffy inside and he had won several times over. I threw my cards down and slammed the dice on them and went outside. I was out there for a bit before I heard him come out. The wind really had made quite a mess, it was getting near sunset and the shine on the Ocean was breathtaking. It was so still and so quiet all alone on the top of the world with him. I looked over the the pool and saw it was in a terrible state, I saw a hose just beyond some potted plants.
I went over to it and turned it on to see if it worked and in my agitated state at him that he had won so many times, I squirted him in the back, he let out quite a shrill. I just dared him to do anything. He thundered over to me and I got him again but not before he braved it and took it away from me and soaked me top to bottom front and back. I couldn't control my laughing. He stopped and came up to me and took my face in his hands. "It's so nice to see and hear you laugh Anne. I gently pulled away from him. He had almost gone too far this time.
"I'm going to change" I said to him and I went back up to my room just barely able to see the steps. I had just taken off my dress and in the darkness I heard his voice " Can I tempt you with that massage?" "Only if you do it well" I had not realized what I had said till I said it. "Give me a few minutes to change and I will come back for you" "OK" "Wear what your comfortable in" he said. I said nothing I decided to wear just a robe. I took a deep breath when about fifteen minutes later it seemed, I saw candlelight coming down the the hall, I never heard his footsteps.
I got up and met him at the door, I saw him smile when he saw what I had on. He handed me the candle and turned on a flashlight he had with him. I followed him up the stairs to where the indoor pool was. He had already lit several candles all around a massage table. Where did all the candles keep coming from I wondered and asked him. "There is usually a good stock in most hotels"
I took that last deep breath and opened my robe and let it fall to my waist, I hear him exhale slowly. I laid face down on the warm cushion. He tucked the robe all the way around my hips. He walked around to where I could see him, he picked up a bottle of oil and rubbed his hand in it and looked at me as to ask 'are you sure' I smiled at him. He came back around and began to rub my shoulders. I could feel he was nervous but he did know what he was doing and did it very well.
He worked over my entire back. "Your still so tense, you were never in danger from me. I know your still angry at me and I can understand that" He bent down and kissed my cheek. "But please don't hate me" This time he had gone too far, I turned my face away from him. How dare he. He stopped touching me and walked back in front of me with his back to me, I took that as queue to get up. I upset him, I knew I had. He turned back to face me. "I'm sorry we couldn't have met under different circumstances, I'm sorry if I hurt you, I"m sorry your vacation was ruined, I'm sorry I frightened you and I'm sorry you spent most of the time angry at me. "
"Be ready by dawn for a flight at nine" I didn't know what to say "Good night" he said and sharply walked past me. I just sat there wondering what just happened and why I felt as though my heart just had gotten ripped out. I was a bit dazed I suppose. He left the flashlight. I finally decided to go upstairs and decided to decide what to do do when I got there. I walked slowly up the stairs, I knew exactly what I wanted to to. When I got to the top and turned to go down the hall, I saw he made the decision for me - his door was shut, I just stared at it for a moment. I thought of knocking but decided not to.
Now it was me who left my door open. I changed my clothes and stood out and watched the fire still raging down there. I went back in and put my stuff together. I took my time all the while wondering if I should go to him. He hadn't hurt me, he did take care of me, he was as nice to me as the situation allowed. I decided to do nothing just see what happened in the morning.
I had fallen asleep at some point. At dawn I felt his fingers caress my face and he barely touched my forehead with is lips. "Its dawn" he said then he took my luggage and walked away. I tried to get my senses together. He was back while I was sitting up to get the rest and quickly walked out again. I wanted to say something to him but I didn't know what. I looked around the room and thought 'This has been one hell of a vacation'
I walked down the stairs to the main lobby and saw there were two other men there, the taller one had watched me walked across the lobby, eyes wide. I stopped just in front of them, he said "Good Morning" in a very thick French accent, I nodded to him and tried to look at Delano but he wouldn't he was telling the other one to get my luggage loaded. He never took his blue/grey eyes off of me, he just slid them slowly up and down me. He spoke loudly to interrupt Delano and the other man.
"Change of plans, I will drive her to the airport" Delano just stared at him, he looked at him. "They need you in Palm Springs as soon as possible anyway" He took my hand and hurried me past Delano out to one of the two cars that were running. He opened the back door and turned to open the driver's door and I felt Delano's hand take mine. He turned to watch us, he was looking at Delano the same way he had looked at me. Delano never said a word he just ran his thumb over my foreheard where he had kissed earlier. "Do you want her to miss her flight, we should go now - we should have left earlier." He said as he slammed his door shut and revved the engine.
Delano stepped back and I got in and closed the door. As soon as I closed the door he sped off. The lunge forward of the car , I knew a piece of heart stayed there on the top of the mountain. He quickly whizzed around the corners and bends far too fast for my personal liking. There was no one else around - not the train of cars there had been on the way up. It seemed to take half the time getting down than it did up, I just stared out the widow in silence. I saw him look at me several times in the rear view mirror but I never met his eyes.
At the bottom of the hill near the gas station he pulled over to the side of the road and stopped. "Before we go on the freeway, do you want to eat of get coffee.?" I finally met his blue/grey eyes in the mirror and shook my head no. "Are you sure, airplane food is terrible and its a long way back to London" I shook my head no again. He took off again and onto the freeway, cut through cars to the farthest left lane. I thought he would have been past the age to show off, or maybe he really did just drive that way. "Do you like Classical music?" I looked in the rear view mirror and his eyes were on the road. "Yes" I said.
He put in a CD and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata began to play. 'How fitting I thought" I felt it vibrate all through the car and me. As the cars whizzed by I started wondering if I had left more than just a piece of my heart up there. 'I wonder if he has left yet, or is he still up there?' I thought. I still saw him look at me several times in the mirror but I never looked back.
When we got to the airport, it was foggy - no shiny Palm trees to see me off. "Wait here" he said and got out to take care of my luggage. He came back around the side and opened my door and stuck his hand in, I took it. He held it much more gently than he did up there. He actually intertwined his fingers into mine. He stopped just inside of the sliding doors and put his hands on my hips and grasped firmly. I looked up at him and he smiled at me, he was a few inches taller than me and one of the loveliest creatures I had ever seen.
He had soft looking dark brown hair that had a deep wave to it, I noticed that in the car but didn't think much of it. His features were soft. He waited for me to pull away but to his surprise and mine I didn't. He let go with one hand and tucked his fingers in the front of my jeans and pulled up and pulled me against him. I felt what he wanted me to feel and I licked my lips quickly without meaning to. He bent down and kissed me as gentle as air on the lips. I didn't pull away.
He took his other hand off my hip and put it around me and pulled up on my jeans again, this time I closed my eyes. He certainly knew what he was doing. He kissed me again but much harder this time and longer. He stopped and looked at me again, but I still didn't pull away, I heard a breath escape him. He took me fully in his arms and put his hands on my bottom. He was aggressively kissing me until he pried my lips apart for his tonuge to slide over mine tenderly but still dominating. He did this for several moments, until he had his fill.
When I finally opened my eyes to look at him he said " The kiss he wanted to give you" He then let me go, I was a bit dazed. He handed me an envelope. "Your reimbursement for your vacation, from the company." He took my hand and placed it in it and kissed my hand " Bon voyage" he said and walked around me and back out the door. I stood for a few seconds trying to regain my senses. I went through security in a haze. I didn't ever remember getting on the plane until I realized I was already there. The Angels dustbin, who knew I would have left so much behind as the plane left the ground.
It took me seven hours into the flight to realize, I didn't even know his name
He grabbed a hold of my arm as I jumped so I wouldn't go under, I looked around and it was dark - near pitch. He still had my arm. "I'm going to let you go and go over to the stairs, just head to the light, I will be at the top." I did what he said and crawled up the stairs to the candle, I couldn't see him at all.
